URGENT NOTICE:

We are in an active Public Comment Period for Elcon's Waterways and Wetlands NPDES Permit, which relates to stormwater discharges during construction.
Please send all comments to:

RA-EPHWELCON@PA.GOV

The January 27 deadline may be extended slightly, due to late notice by the DEP, but try to get your comments in before the deadline, if possible.
Here is the link to PADEP’s Elcon website. Scroll down to the “Waterways and Wetlands….” Section and you will see the NPDES application and DEP’s Letter of Deficiency.

Help Us Stop Elcon!

Reasons we don't want Elcon here:

  • Elcon would be located half a mile from the Delaware River, the primary source of drinking water for millions. Water ways on site are directly linked to the River & hazardous waste spills can make it to our drinking water supply.

  • The Philadelphia Water Dept. (15 miles downriver) has urged the PA DEP to not approve Elcon’s proposal.  OUR intakes are even closer & the threats of spills greater.

  • Elcon’s plant could adversely affect the air quality within a 30-mile radius, according to the Clean Air Council.  We already have the worst ozone air quality in PA and fail current air standards (EPA & American Lung Association).

  • ELCON plans to import 194,560 tons of hazardous waste a year and burn more than 1,000,000 lbs of toxic waste a day, using thermal oxidation.

  • 20 truckloads of hazardous waste a day on local roads.

  • Hazardous waste from ten states: MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, VA and NC.

  • Possible future use of existing rail 200 ft from wetlands and waterways for nearly 1 mile.

  • 10,000 + kids attend schools within 4 miles of this proposed toxic waste facility.

  • Elcon has applied to handle 268 hazardous chemicals and plan to store hazardous chemicals on site

  • The likely possibility of extreme weather and potential damage, flooding, and spills on site are of great concern.

  • Elcon’s presence will discourage other employers and potential “green” jobs.                                                                                                                               Check out the "Articles & Info" tab above for more.
